Which is the Best, Internet Phone Service or Land-line Phone Service

VoIP phone service, also known as broadband phone service, works by connecting your regular telephone to the internet. Your telephone calls are then sent over the internet as small bits of information, called packets, instead of them being sent over a regular telephone wire. This type of phone service has the following pros and cons:

Internet Telephone Service Pros:
• The only tax currently collected on internet phone service is the Federal 3% tax.
• “Local Calling Only” service plans are very cheap.
• There are also VoIP plans that include free calling to other, select, countries.
• Landline phone numbers can be ported to your VoIP account.
• Extremely cheap international long distance calling prices.

Internet Telephone Service Cons:
• Digital phone service goes down when your internet goes down.
• 911 with internet phone service only works if you keep your E911 info updated with your internet phone service company.

Regular phone service is where a dedicated line is hooked to your home by a telephone carrier. While cable carriers do install phone service into homes and offices, they provide what they call “Digital Phone Service”. Digital phone service is a fancy name for internet phone service. Regular phone service has the following pros and cons:

Land-line Phone Service Pros:
• Regular phone service is technically more stable than internet phone service.
• Your old fashioned phone number gets put in the Yellow Pages, while your internet phone service phone number doesn’t.
• Landline phone signals, overall, sound better than internet phone service.
• 911 works automatically without putting in your address.
• High speed internet service isn’t required for your landline phones to work.

Land-line Phone Service Cons:
• Taxes and fees can easily be over 25% of a landline phone bill.
• Only works in your home or office.
• Local and long distance phone service, plus an extra line for dial up internet service, cost more than high speed internet service and an unlimited VoIP calling plan.

While trying to be fair with the pros and cons of landline telephone service and internet phone service, it is getting so that the only reason to still have a regular phone plan is because you either can’t get fast enough internet service, or you really like to make sure your call quality is superb. But, with most people now using either land line phone service, or cell phones, scratching for that last 2% of call clarity isn’t worth isn’t worth all of the extra money you’ll have to pay each month.
